Ashtabula and Woodburn Historic Houses
Pendleton, SC 29670
Located about 35 miles west of downtown Greenville and just outside the charming historic town of Pendleton, Ashtabula and Woodburn Historic House Museums are among the six remaining antebellum plantations of the many that once surrounded Pendleton when it was a summer resort in the early 19th century for the Low Country gentry. Both houses are listed on the National Register of Historical Places and are sites on the SC National Heritage Corridor. These house museums are open for public tours from April - October and for private tours year-round with 24-hours notice. Special school field trips can be scheduled for 1 to 3 hours. Woodburn is the perfect setting for elegant outdoor weddings on the sweeping lawn.
Ashtabula was built by Lewis Ladsen Gibbes and his wife the former Maria Drayton in about 1825-1828. The 10 acre site includes the original brick 2-story building (c.1780) which may have been one of the earliest taverns in the SC Upstate. The house is furnished with antebellum antiques and an outstanding textile collection of garments and linens.
Woodburn was built by Charles Cotesworth Pinckney in 1830 as a summer residence. The large four-story house is furnished with many fine antiques. The site includes a carriage house, slave/tennant cabin (Jane Hunter), and log Moorhead cabin. |
