The Greenville County Museum of Art is counted among the country's premiere American Art museums, drawing visitors from around the world to see installations of work by two of the nation's greatest contemporary artists, Andrew Wyeth and Jasper Johns.
The 2010 schedule features the dramatic new exhibition, A Portrait of Greenville, which brings together projects commissioned over the past twenty-five years. Featured are new works by such nationally known artists as Andrew Lenaghan and John Moore and by noted regional artists like Ed Rice, William McCullough, and Tim Barnwell. Watch the Museum's website (www.greenvillemuseum.org) for special events, with emphasis on family happenings. The Museum also features its acclaimed Southern Collection, which traces the history of American art from Colonial times to the present. Open Tuesday-Saturday, 11am-5pm, Sundays 1pm-5pm, Thursday evenings until 8pm. Closed Mondays and major holidays. Admission is always absolutely free. Top: The Greenville County Museum of Art was named one of the most interesting buildings in the Upstate by the American Association of Architects. Middle: Artist Edward Rice created architectural paintings of Greenville's four earliest churches as his contribution to A Portrait of Greenville. The churches were all built originally on land donated by Vardry McBee in the 1820s.
